Propagating Pandan

Propagating the pandan plant is a means to multiply your plant, so you have more!

How to propagate your pandan plant

Pandan plant can be propogated by taking a pups that emerge from the soil (offshoot from the parent pandan plant in the soil) and putting it in water . Let the pups mature a little (10-20cm) before detaching it from the parent plant in order for it to develop some roots. Before detaching the pup from the parent plant, soak your pandan plant in diluted seaweed solution a day before so you can give the roots a little boost before the separation.

With a sharp knife or scalpel, cut the pup from the parent plant
and make sure that you keep as much roots attached to the pup as
possible. Clean the roots of the pup by washing away the soil and
placing it in vase/bucket of fresh water.

Be careful not to immerse the crown of the pandan in water, this will cause the pandan to rot, make sure the leaves are above the water level. Once the plant is in the water, roots will start forming in a few weeks. Once a good set of roots have formed, you can plant your pandan in soil that has good drainage. Make sure that you only propagate your pandan during the warmer months.

You can also propagate your pandan via pups that have aerial roots
but this can be a little more difficult. With pups above the soil
level, just cut them off and plant then in soil with good drainage and water with fresh water. If you use soil that doesn’t drain well or you water it too much, the soil will have a mud like consistency and will choke the roots of your plant.

After you have planted your new baby pandan plant, it could take a few years to mature. During this time, don’t use any of the leaves as they assist the plant to mature fully. Keep your pandan in pots so they are portable and if you live in non-tropical regions, don’t plant them in the ground as the weather conditions are too extreme for the pandan plant.

To induce pups (offshoots) from the parent plant. Plant your pandan close to the neck of the pandan and don’t plant them tall.
